DENNIS
KUCINICH
A Man for the People
If you haven't heard about him yet, it's because the mainstream media (commercial radio, TV, newspapers and magazines) has not done it's job, which is to fairly report on the platforms and activities of all legitimate candidates that are running for the presidency of the US.
Some Kucinich Platforms in Brief:
(To see all his platforms in more detail, go to www.kucinich.us )
1)
Kucinich is the only member of Congress (Rep. Ohio) who has repeatedly introduced
bills to regulate the production of genetically engineered foods, a relatively
new technology which independent research has shown to be potentially dangerous
to human health and the environment. He introduced first-of-a-kind legislation
to label all foods that are genetically engineered, known as the "Genetically
Engineered Food Right to Know Act". In poll after poll, 80-95% of respondents
want genetically engineered food labeled. Kucinich also introduced the "Genetically
Engineered Food Safety Act" which would mandate scientifically-valid
safety testing of genetically engineered foods. He was able to secure $200,000
within the fiscal year 2000 agriculture spending bill for long-term research.
This research was conducted by the Department of Agricultures Ames Research
Laboratory. The research investigated the potential risks from a genetically
engineered corn that produces a bacterial insecticide. Certain forms of this
insecticide may cause harm to the Monarch Butterfly, an important species
that must be protected.
Representative Kucinich scored a significant victory in the effort to guard
against the unknown impacts of genetically engineered crops. He offered and
passed an amendment to H.R. 2646, the Farm Security Act of 2001 that triples
the research on the negative impacts of genetically engineered crops. The
USDA spends $180 million a year towards biotechnology research aimed at creating
new agricultural products, while almost no research is conducted on the risks
of these products. This amendment had strong support from farmers and environmentalists.
Kucinich also introduced in several Congresses the Genetically Engineered Crop and Animal Framer Protection Act, and the Genetically Engineered Organism Liability Act, (which takes the liability for damages caused by GE foods from the shoulders of the farmer and places it squarely where it belongs - on the producers of the GE technology).
Please be aware that Congress has woefully failed in its mandate to protect the health of the American people. In all the years that GE foods have been foisted on an unsuspecting public, CONGRESS HAS NOT PASSED EVEN ONE LAW TO REGULATE THIS NEW, CONTROVERSIAL AND VERY RISKY TECHNOLOGY.
2) Kucinich Led the opposition in Congress to the war in Iraq, and sued Bush to stop him from going to war without a congressional declaration; opposed giving Bush another $87 billion for the war and has a plan to bring the troops home, and replace them with a United Nations force. Kucinich will stop the sweetheart no-bid contracts to corporations like Halliburton. And he will make sure the Iraqi people swiftly regain control over their country and its oil resources.
3) Kucinich will cut the bloated military budget by 15% and reinvest these funds creating millions of jobs for Americans to rebuild America, including schools, infrastructure, universal health coverage and protections for the environment.
4) Kucinich voted against the "Patriot Act" and has introduced a bill to repeal large sections of it.
5) Kucinich has introduced a bill to establish genuinely universal health coverage.
6) Kucinich will replace NAFTA, GATT and WTO with trade agreements respecting worker's rights and the environment, and has a 98% lifetime pro-union voting record from the AFL-CIO.
7) Kucinich has pledged to sign the Kyoto Treaty on Global Warming, and to lead our country to 20% renewable energy by the year 2010.
8) Kucinich is for women's reproductive choice.
9) Kucinich wants new protections for family farmers - this is particularly important for our raw food community because some of our organic food is grown by small family farmers.
10) Restore full Social Security Benefits at 65.
Dennis J. Kucinich is a four-term Congressman from Ohio and Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He has defeated incumbent Republicans in elections for Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio State Senator, and US Congress Member.
