2003
Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich
(Democratic Presidential Candidate, 2004 & 2008)
On The Issues
Civil Liberties:
"We
cannot justify widespread wiretaps and internet surveillance without judicial
supervision, let alone with it. We cannot justify secret searches without
a warrant. ... We cannot justify giving the FBI total access to any type of
data that may exist in any system anywhere, such as medical records and financial
records. ... We cannot justify a government that takes from the people our
right to privacy and then assumes for its own operations a right to total
secrecy. ... We should not let the actions of terrorists cause us to reject
our American system of justice. The ultimate terror in a democracy is the
destruction of constitutional principles. Let us defend against terrorism."
Department of Peace:
"Citizens
across the United States are now uniting in a great cause to establish a Department
of Peace, seeking nothing less than the transformation of our society, to
make nonviolence an organizing principle, to make war archaic through creating
a paradigm shift in our culture for human development, for economic and political
justice, and for violence control."
Universal Health Care:
"I
see a new horizon for health care for all Americans with a universal, single
payer system."
Reproductive Rights:
"I
support Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose, and will select Supreme
Court justices who affirm this Constitutional right."
Iraq:
"We
are not defending America in Iraq. Iraq did not attack this nation. Iraq has
no ability to attack this nation. Each innocent civilian casualty represents
a threat to America for years to come and will end up making our nation less
safe. ... Only international cooperation will help us meet the challenge of
terrorism. ... Seventy-five billion dollars more for war. Three-quarters of
a trillion dollars for tax cuts, but no money for veterans' benefits. Money
for war. No money for health care in America, but money for war. No money
for social security, but money for war. We have money to blow up bridges over
the Tigris and the Euphrates, but no money to build bridges in our own cities.
We have money to ruin the health of the Iraqi children, but no money to repair
the health of our own children and our educational programs."
Economic Justice:
"I
see an America where the economy works for everyone because everyone is working.
I see a new horizon in this country where there is no such thing as an acceptable
level of unemployment. Nearly 9,000,000 Americans are unemployed. Millions
more are not being included in the official count. Average wages are falling.
People are taking pay cuts to keep their jobs. The unemployed and the employed
alike are experiencing a falling standard of living. ... Where the private
sector fails to provide jobs, the public sector has a moral responsibility
to do so. People want work, not welfare. And while there ought to be welfare
for those unable to work, there ought to be work for those who are able to..."
International Cooperation:
"The
United States must affirm principles of sustainability as well as recognize
and promote intentional cooperation and agreements. We must affirm and ratify
treaties beginning with: The Kyoto Treaty on Global Climate Change, The Biodiversity
Treaty, The Forest Protection Treaty, The Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty,
The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, The Antiballistic Missile Treaty, The Landmine
Ban Treaty, The Biological Weapons Convention, The Chemical Weapons Convention,
and The International Criminal Court."
Campaign Finance:
"Less
than one percent of the US population contributes 80% of the money in federal
elections. The top one percent in income also received more than half the
tax cuts. Tax policy has become an engine for transferring wealth upward.
... Private control of campaign financing leads to private control of the
government itself... The restoration of our American Democracy depends upon
public financing."
The Environment:
"We
must focus on a new environmental agenda which enforces not only our basic
environmental needs, like clean water, clean air, food safety, energy efficiency,
safe energy, global climate change, sustainable development, reclaiming our
land and the principles of conservation. ... We must lessen our dependence
and reliance on oil and begin to usher in new technologies such as solar power
and harnessing wind energy."
Corporations:
"Corporations
should be compelled to pay a fair share of taxes. If corporations shift profits
offshore to avoid paying taxes, they should not be permitted to operate in
the United States.
Nuclear Weapons:
"We
must demand that our nation and all nations abide by the principles of the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, stop the development of new nuclear weapons,
take all nuclear weapons systems off alert, persist towards total, worldwide
elimination of all nuclear weapons. Our nation must revive the Antiballistic
Missile Treaty, sign and enforce the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, abandon
plans to build a so-called missile shield, prohibit the introduction of weapons
into outer space."
Trade:
"NAFTA
has attacked federal laws meant to protect worker rights, human rights and
environmental quality principles. It is time to repeal NAFTA."
Priorities:
"This
Administration's domestic agenda of tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent
and an aggressive foreign policy will leave our pressing domestic needs unmet."
