ARE
YOU SHOPPING IN THE DARK?
"Whether
you are part of the organic movement or just an interested member
of the public, Your Right to Know; Genetic Engineering and the
Secret Changes in your Food, is a must-read on this vitally important
issue. The scientists, food experts, farmers, and health professionals
who have come together to produce this book do us all a real service."
Nell
Newman, Newman's Own Organics
from the Foreword
We're
all aware of genetically engineered foods, but few of us understand
the issues or know the facts. For example, did you know that;
-
More
than 60% of processed foods in your supermarket contain genetically
engineered ingredients?
-
Genetic
engineering can lower the nutritional value of foods?
-
Milk
from cows treated with rBGH contains elevated levels of a hormone
that has been linked to higher risk of colon, prostate, and breast
cancers?
-
GE
crops can lead to increased pesticide use?
-
GE
crops threaten the livelihood of farmers across the country?
-
Genetic
engineering could lead to the extinction of salmon and other fish
species?
Your
Right to Know; Genetic Engineering and the Secret Changes in Your Food
explains the issues and tells us what we know and don't know about these
foods. Most importantly it provides a comprehensive and up-to-the-minute
guide on the very real dangers these altered foods present to our health,
the environment and farm communities.
As
you learn about the risks of GE foods you'll want to know how to avoid
them. This is a real problem for consumers. Under pressure from
the biotechnology industry, our government has refused to label these
foods. So to give you and your family the right to choose non-GE foods,
this book contains an illustrated shopping guide, and a pull-out "pocket
shopping guide" you can take to the supermarket, which allows
you to side-step all those shelves loaded with GE ingredients and
make healthier food choices. With these accessible guides, and the
book's other resources pages, you'll get in depth and easy to apply
advice on:
- How
to identify and avoid the foods in your supermarket that may contain
GE ingredients
- Where
the major food companies and supermarket chains and fast-food chains
stand on using GE crops and ingredients
- GE-free
and sustainable brands you should buy and where you can find them
- How
you can become active in promoting a GE-free food supply
