ITEM #1: In June, I attended the Portland Living Foods Festival as a speaker-presenter, as well as a learner. The Festival was a great success, with a larger attendance than the preceding year.
There were many interesting, informative and exciting speakers, food presentations and booths and the gourmet raw food available was extraordinarily delicious.
One suggestion I do offer for next year's Festival is to have more fresh salads available. There were lots of gourmet raw main course dishes and desserts, but not enough salads at the main food court. Greenies had to go to one of the outdoor booths near the front gate where a couple of local farmers were bringing in organic greens and herbs and providing salads, but we didn't find out about this until a few days into the event.
The first important thing we learned upon being picked up at the Portland airport by Brian, a volunteer helper, is that the correct pronunciation for Oregon is Ore-ee-gun. That's the way the Ore-ee-guners (Oregonians) like it pronounced, instead of Ar-eh-gone. Brian couched his correction with good humor!
The second thing we learned is that Ore-ee-gun is truly beautiful and the fresh air is to die for.
NEXT ITEM: I attended two lectures by Josh Steinhauser, who is a consultant for a distributor that brings 1/3 of all the organic produce to the East Coast. I attended Josh's lecture twice because I wanted to make sure I was hearing the information correctly; it was so astonishing.
In my book, Hooked on Raw, I point out that getting FRESH produce is very important. We, who want to provide our bodies with the best, have to be conscious of the fact that a lot of our produce, especially if it's shipped across the country, is not as fresh as we need it to be. I had some suggestions in my book for getting the freshest produce possible, such as to shop at farmer's markets where the food is picked either on the same day or one day previously; to join a Community Supported Agriculture group (the food received from them is picked the same day or one day before delivery); to shop at health stores on the day the produce comes in; and/or to grow some of your own food either in an outdoor garden or grow sprouts and baby greens indoors.
What was so astonishing about Josh's disclosure was that I hadn't even considered that a distributor could corner the market on organic broccoli (or any other vegetable), buy it all up, put it in cold storage for up to 5 weeks and wait for the price to go up because of the shortage and thus create a demand for the then higher priced broccoli that the distributor would then provide.
According to Josh, this is exactly what happened when the distributor he consults for saw a shortage on the market of organic broccoli. They found the only source where it was available, bought it all up and waited for the price to rise before selling it.
So FRESH organic broccoli that we bought on the East Coast during that time could have been up to five weeks old!!
Josh says that when distributors do this, they don't do it because they intentionally want to hurt the consumer, he says it is because of their bottom line. They've figured a way to make a little extra profit. He says that whether the food is viable or not doesn't even enter into the equation.
A Rutgers University study showed that 24 hours after harvesting, fresh produce lost 50% of its nutritional value.
My advice is to try to get at least some of your produce freshly picked from sources that you know and trust, and plan on growing either an indoor or outdoor garden as soon as possible.

Another presenter at the Festival was Howard Lyman, author of The Mad Cowboy, a former cattle rancher who became vegan and decided to spill the beans on the deplorable state of the meat industry from his own personal experience.
Howard says that Mad Cow Disease (MCD) is here in the USA and is being covered up. It is just a matter of time before it becomes public, like it did in England a few years ago. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) is another name for Mad Cow Disease. Other animals can develop the equivalent of this disease, known by different names, according to their species.
Howard believes that animals get the disease by being fed ground up animals of their own species, (as well as diseased animals of any species). This forces cattle, that are basically grass and herb eaters by nature, to become cannibals. Since the disaster in England, the US government has tightened up some regulations on feeding ruminant protein to ruminants, but still allows blood meal. Howard points out that compliance with regulations is lax and inspections are miniscule.
The human equivalent disease to MCD is called nvCruetzfeldt Jakob Disease, a new variant of a disease suffered by New Guineans. The New Guinean's version of the disease, called Kuru, was believed to be caused by cannibalism.
Howard Lyman believes that nvCJD is being lumped together with the astronomically fast-rising incidence of Alzheimer's Disease. In other words, it is not being accurately reported in the US. Aside from the obvious of NOT consuming meat, Howard cautioned women against using cosmetics and lipstick because most of them contain "rendered" fats. Howard believes that these products put women at risk for nvCJD because rendered fats contain the prions of MCD.
Progressive investigators attribute MCD to the presence of prions. Prions are microscopic protein particles believed to be infectious. They cannot be destroyed even by temperatures of 1100¡ F.
What are "rendered" fats? The carcasses of all dead animals, diseased or not, are collected from all sources such as euthanized dogs and cats, road kill, downer cows (these are cows that are well one day and drop dead the next), animal parts and offal not used for feed or industry. This collection is taken to a rendering plant where it is boiled and the fatty part is separated from the rest and sold for use in cosmetics, as well as in other products. This is called "RENDERED" fat. The boiling does not kill the prions, since they seem to be indestructable.
Do prions cause disease? Please note that my viewpoint is in the minority at this time. Prions are a naturally occurring body cell surface protein. They become lethal when their conformation is changed. (see more detailed explanation below in the Mini-Glossary) Even though I do not believe that prions cause disease, but rather are associated with disease and develop as a result of disease, still this does not mean that I would knowingly want to consume prions if they can be avoided. Why pollute my body if I don't have to?
For women who choose to use cosmetics and lipstick, a letter to the chosen cosmetic company asking if they use rendered fats in their products would be a good first step. (If you get any responses, please let me know about them.) Or use products that do not contain or come into contact with any meat products or rendered fats.

names for a disease of cattle which causes their brains to degenerate, become
spongy and develop holes. The cattle soon perish.
- nvCreutzfeldt Jakob Disease - the corresponding disease in humans - nv stands for a new variant of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease.
- Prions are microscopic protein particles believed to be infectious and "officially" discovered in 1997 by Stanley Prusiner, MD, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery. Prions however, are believed to have been discovered over a hundred and fifty years before by Antoine Bechamp and every 25 to 50 years thereafter rediscovered by different researchers who gave them different names. Bechamp called them microzymas, and he believed that they changed forms going from benign to virulent, depending on the health or "terrain" of the individual. Then Royal Rife discovered similar molecules in the 1930s and more recently Gaston Naessons of Canada named them somatids. Through a specialized microscope, Naessons discovered that the normal 3-stage cycle of the somatid became destabilized through a weakened immune system which caused the somatid to change configurations and degenerate through 13 additional growth stages. In simple language - the somatids changed from their normal form to a lethal form.

NEXT ITEM: We have heard from the Washington "heads" in the last month that we must "watch what we say, watch what we do, NOW IS NOT THE TIME" for dissent. Laws are quickly being pushed through the Congress to deprive us of many of our remaining precious liberties in the name of "Homeland" security. To have to curtail what we say in the name of preserving freedom is ludicrous. It means that you are losing the very thing that you want to preserve.
Have you noticed that all voices for peace have been obliterated (or minimized) from our mainstream media outlets - radio and TV? I was watching a foreign station the other day on cable, it was in a language I did not understand - but the images were very clear to me - hundreds of thousands of people worldwide are marching and rallying for Peace and an end to the merciless bombing and killing of innocent civilians. And don't forget that our missiles contain depleted uranium that will bring disease and deformities to future generations of civilians in the countries bombed, through their lethal radiation dust.
We who have been fighting for health "freedoms" know how difficult it is to achieve those freedoms since they were never guaranteed to us in our Bill of Rights in the first place. Health freedom, which means among other things, being allowed to choose alternative remedies for serious illness is not a given in our society. The only "official" remedies for cancer, as an example, are burn, slash and poison (euphemistic translation = radiation, surgery and chemotherapy.)
If a doctor recommends an herb, a change of diet and lifestyle -- off with his head and take his license away.
Let's not let our government erode more of our Bill of Rights and constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. Get involved in protecting them. Make your voice heard - NOW IS THE TIME to speak. Benjamin Franklin said "Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech."
