In schools they usually have science experiments where you power a digital clock with a potato. This makes me wonder about the acidity, and maybe this is also the sort of thing that contributes to these teeth problems. A friend of mine once brought me a lamp that was powered by raw potatoes.
I've been looking through some of my books but can nowhere find that potatoes are acid forming in the body. Raw potatoes, like most fruits and vegetables, help release the acid from an overly acid body. I saw this happen recently when the person helping me with my website ate approx. 1/2 cup of raw potato salad plus a couple of bites of green salad at my house and by the time she got to the subway station she had a fever. That raw food is really powerful! (But then she went to McDonald's and had a burger. By doing that, she interrupted what had been the beginnings of a body cleanse and felt ok again.)
There is a confusion about what constitutes acid. Lemons, especially ripe and organic ones, produce an alkaline reaction in the body and help to release acidity. So the acidity in a lemon does not mean that it will make your body acid. The same is true for practically all fruits and vegetables that contain acid (with some exceptions, such as prunes, plums, cranberries and a few others). The foods that produce an acid condition in the body are mainly the meats, fish, poultry, dairy, alcohol, grains, and nuts (with the exception of almonds and pine nuts). Grains and nuts that have been soaked and sprouted become more alkaline, but it is a range like on a scale. If they are acid forming in their dry state, then in the sprouted state they range more towards the alkaline on a scale.
There are several books on acid/alkaline balance but they can be confusing because many of them do not agree with each other, so you are left to decide things for yourself. In general, according to these books, what determines whether a food is acid or alkaline forming in the body is the type of minerals it contains and which predominate in the food. Phosphorus, Sulfur and Chlorine are acid forming. Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium and Sodium are alkaline forming. How much acid a food contains has no relation to whether it is acid or alkaline forming in the body. Do you understand?
The following is from Acid and Alkaline by Herman Aihara "In fruit and most vegetables, the organic acid (such as the acidity of an orange which you can taste) contains many elements such as potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. Organic acids, when oxidized, become carbon dioxide and water; the alkaline elements ( K, Na, Ca, Mg) remain and neutralize body acid. In other words, strangely enough, acid foods reduce body acids. This is the reason that fruits and most vegetables are considered alkaline forming foods. Conversely, high protein foods and most grains, when metabolized, produce acid that must be neutralized; therefore they are generally acid forming foods."
You can check the acidity in your body by getting some pH paper and testing your saliva. If it is alkaline on empty stomach, then you are ok. If you test when you've eaten something, then you will not get a true reading.
